Clinical research IT infrastructure

Medical research is mainly based on the conduct of clinical trials. For several reasons the complexity increases, e.g. because of regulatory requirements (among others in drug trials), necessary crosslinked multicenter structures or current challenges of genetic research based on biological material in biobanks. Against this background, medical researchers without a powerful, integrated and secure clinical IT infrastructure are less able to provide a high-quality research.

At the University of Lübeck (UZL) a central unit "IT for Clinical Research, Lübeck" (ITCR L) is responsible to provide such infrastructure for those medical researchers who are dependent on the data management of sensitive patient data. It does this in close cooperation with the IT department of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) and other institutions, which are explained under

A close cooperation between employees of IMI and the ITCR results in direct benefits and mutual synergies between teaching and research (IMI) on the one hand and IT services and applied research (ITCR-L) on the other hand:

  • Practice-relevant topics for university teaching in the Bachelor and Master study "Medical Informatics"
  • Demand for innovative medical computer science research, particularly in the area of semantic data integration and data analysis.
  • Meet the growing demand of medical science informatics (youth development).

As an example the joint engagement in the application stage of the BMBF-funded project “medical informatics” should be mentioned.
